The issue we are covering today is about the procedure you must follow whenever you are presented with a warning message in your Ledger asking you to enter the recovery phrase. Never enter your recovery phrase online.
If you have seen this warning message, the chances are that your Ledger Live app is compromised, perhaps by not downloading it from Ledger directly, or by downloading some malware. Either way, this is an issue you must act on right away.
Solutions
Make sure you are using the latest version of Ledger Live.
#1. Never type your recovery phrase anywhere online.
If you follow this simple rule, this hacking attack will not affect you as you will close the app instantly.
#2. Close all apps, restart your computer.
If a different type of malware was installed on your device, restarting the computer might not activate it, especially since it only interacts when the Ledger Live app is open.
#3. Uninstall Ledger Live.
Since you don’t know where the problem is coming from it is safer to delete and uninstall the entire Ledger Live app.
#4. Download the Ledger app directly from Ledger, and install it.
The type of installation will depend on the machine type you use. Today, we will cover the installation step for a Mac but for other machines, a simple Googling should do the trick.
Re-installing Ledger Live
- Navigate to ledger.com/ledger-live/download.
- Download the Ledger Live application.
- Double-click the .dmg file you downloaded.
- Drag and drop the Ledger Live application to the Applications folder.

5. Start Ledger Live from Launchpad or Spotlight.
6. Depending on your macOS version, the following message displays. Click Open to allow the installation.

Conclusion
Unfortunately, security is key when it comes to protecting your crypto assets. The only way to be protected is to never share your recovery phrase online or on any digital platform. The recovery key should only be typed into your Ledger device. If you follow this simple rule, your assets will be safe. However, if you do come across an unexpected warning message, like the one described above, use this guide to eradicate the problem.
